SALEM, Massachusetts (Army News Service, August 20, 2010) - Gov. Massachusetts Deval Patrick signed legislation designating the city of Salem as the birthplace of the national guard a ceremony held at the hotel city here, 19 August 2010.
The Governor was joined at the ceremony by Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, many State and officials, groups for veterans and members of the National Guard of Massachusetts.
"For a community that has so much history, us thought it was possible to add," said Driscoll. ''"But certainly he was, by Salem, recognized as the birthplace of the National Guard."
Driscoll said having the city officially recognized as the birthplace of the National Guard is very special, particularly now when custody plays a large role in the defence of the nation.
The origins of the National Guard and the u.s. Army in its oldest form, are traced back to the creation of North, South and Eastern regiments that were formed by a legislative act of General Court of Massachusetts on December 13 Bay, 1636.Cette date is recognized as the anniversary of the National Guard.
Members of the regiment was held their first gathering on the commune of Salem in April 1637, who started the foundation of what would become the National Guard.Les army four older units in the army are used today in the National Guard in Massachusetts and follow their regimental lineage to the Salem militia: 181 st infantry regiment of cavalry 182nd; field artillery regiment ?101st; and the 101st engineer battalion.
Congressmen John Tierney was among officials present and said he was impressed by how much care has dealt with the burden of frequent service, locally and overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We are very proud," said Tierney. ''"The National Guard did a lot for this country."
Tierney sentiments were echoed by Joseph c. Carter, the Adjutant General of the National Guard for Massachusetts division general.
"We are the nation first of all, the National Guard of Massachusetts," said Carter. "" """It's an honour as well as a privilege to participate in this important opportunity recognizing this magnificent city, where it all began AJAX".
Carter said on the Massachusetts National Guard and proud history began in Salem and continues as they serve their neighbours here in Massachusetts and their American colleagues in our great nation and abroad.
Carter has declared this day commemorates this day here in spring in 1637 when citizen soldiers gathered on the commune of Salem in defence of their community.
"Citizen soldiers, who a few years later, 138 would be among the first to gather on Lexington and Concord to defend the beginning of our Republic," said Carter.
"It is an honour for us to have as our official home recognized by the community, all Salem", said the crankcase.
Patrick spoken briefly the rich history of custody recognized and national Massachusetts National Guard today for their service, sacrifice, and the clarity of mission and made special note of 1,000 currently serving members abroad.
"It's a privilege to be here to recognize the origins of the National Guard," said Patrick.Il was also a privilege to recognize that the first militia to civic ideals that have been defined as an opportunity, equal and fair play, said Patrick.
The Governor said that he was humbled to sign a draft law that draws attention to the origins of a commitment to these ideals.
"Massachusetts is the birthplace of our nation and it is only right that an institution designed to protect our community and our country, be rooted again, said Patrick."
With the conclusion of remarks the crowd gathered around of the Governor, 2: 17p. a.m., he signed invoice HB1145 law and the National Guard has received its official birth place.
